Charlottesville Crime Rates

On paper, Charlottesville has a relatively high crime rate compared to both other cities in Virginia and the United States as a whole. We will go over the statistics in a minute, but understand that these rates correspond to the downtown Charlottesville area. Most residents live outside city limits, as it is safer and more affordable.

From my perspective, the city feels incredibly family friendly and safe during the day and early evenings. However, most of the businesses close by 10pm, leaving room for poverty and alcohol fueled crime. If you are new to Charlottesville, avoid going downtown late at night and the majority of crime risk is gone.

With a crime rate of 36 per one thousand residents, Charlottesville has one of the highest crime rates in the state. In fact, more than 97% of the communities in Virginia have a lower crime rate than Charlottesville. The city's violent crime rate is also significant, with a resident's chance of becoming a victim of one of these crimes being one in 187. Property crime is particularly prevalent in the city, with a resident's chance of becoming a victim of property crime being one in 33, which is a rate of 30 per one thousand population.

Charlottesville Annual Weather

Charlottesville experiences a fairly moderate climate with an annual high temperature of 67ºF and an annual low of 47ºF. The city receives an average of 47.68 inches of precipitation annually, and it experiences an average of 16 inches of snowfall each year. These figures make Charlottesville's climate more temperate than many parts of the country, particularly those with more extreme temperatures in the northern or southern regions.

From my view, the best season in Charlottesville is the fall. The vibrant colors of leaves changing, revitalized energy from a new University class, and the endless outdoor entertainment make it an idealistic destination. Spring, although short and a bit bi-polar from a weather perspective, is also an incredible season in Charlottesville.
